Lobbied successfully for the addition
of a Children’s Ward to the new Cardiac Surgical Building
at the National Hospital, Colombo. |

Donated outright or facilitated the purchase of
various equipment, including the following:
- two paediatric ventilators
- haematology analyzer
- heart-lung machines
- 2D colour Doppler echo machine
- syringe pumps
- ASD closure devices |

Arranged, funded and supported a two-week training
course in paediatric cardiological treatment and care for the
cardiac surgeons, anaesthesiologists, perfusionists and members
of the nursing staff of the cardiac surgical units of the National
Hospital, Colombo and the Sri Jayawardenapura Hospital, Kotte,
at the Children’s Hospital, Chennai (Madras), India. |

Initiated, arranged, funded and supported several
visits to Sri Lanka by two cardiologists associated with the
Children’s Heart Project of Arizona, Dr. Dudley Halpe
and Dr. J. Trosevit. Funding by the CHP, Sri Lanka, enabled
these surgeons to bring with them their own cardiac teams and
equipment and work alongside Sri Lankan professionals at the
National and Sri Jayawardenapura Hospitals. |

Obtained and supported the services of numerous
cardiac specialists, including those dealing with paediatric
cardiology, to demonstrate new techniques in the management
of cardiac disease and to train Sri Lankan medical professionals
in these techniques. The most recent of these initiatives was
a workshop conducted at the National Hospital on ‘device
closure of ASDs’, held on April, 2004. |

Commenced an interim programme of funding selected
children in urgent need of surgical intervention to get their
surgery performed in the private sector.
50 children have already been funded to date. |
